News | Local Hackathon to Create Solutions for Real-World Problems in Just 24 Hours

January 6, 2016

Modesto, CA – On Friday, January 15th, dozens of local programmers will converge at Greens on Tenth in Modesto for the 2nd Annual ModSpace Hackathon. Hosted by the Downtown Modesto ModSpace, the Stanislaus Business Alliance, GeoStrategies, and InventaWeb, the event has attracted key sponsors that include DataPath, Oportun, RethinkDB, Associated Feed and Supply, Ayera, Novo Technologies and several local meetup groups.

The 24-hour event will start Friday night at 6:30 p.m., with teams of four programmers each launching a coding and digital design project that must be completed and fully functional by Saturday evening. Last year’s projects included a system for tracking political sentiment by region and sending brief updates to politicians, a video-based training system wherein students learning via video are able to view only the portion of videos with the answers to questions missed the first time through the quiz, and a system for making music with your body movements as seen through a Microsoft Kinect. The winning team created a system for sending out email messages similar to Mail Chimp but with new features to keep track of which recipients clicked on specific links.

Stanislaus Business Alliance CEO David White believes the existence of events like hackathons are instrumental to Stanislaus County establishing itself as a technology hub, a vision complimented by the recent explosion of tech companies in the area. “If we as a community make innovation and technology priorities, we will see huge gains in our local economy and succeed in what we have long tried to do—keep our talent pool right here in Stanislaus County,” said White. “Hackathons like this one are where real-world 21st century problems merge with progressive solutions so we encourage anyone with an interest in the creative process to come out and witness the process firsthand.”

The event will be judged by local and regional engineering and technology magnates, with $4,200 in prize money on the line. Registration and event details can be found at and Greens on Tenth is located at 953 10th street in Modesto.
